Our Lady Star of the Sea

Brookings, Oregon

Our Lady Star of the Sea is a Catholic parish in Oregon undertaking a phased renovation of its 1970s church building. The existing interior suffers from dated finishes, low-quality furnishings, and a sanctuary constrained by its original architecture.

The first phase introduces new marble liturgical furnishings, including a sculpted altar, ambo, and altar of repose, with niches for sacred images, setting a refined tone for the renewal. A subsequent phase adds a classical reredos rising behind the tabernacle to anchor the space visually and devotionally.

Because the existing sanctuary is shallow and capped by a low lean-to roof, achieving a meaningful transformation requires partial demolition and reconstruction. The proposed design extends the sanctuary roughly 15 feet and raises the ceiling to match the height of the nave, opening the space and allowing light and proportion to read properly.

At the heart of the renewed design is the altar--tabernacle axis, framed by Corinthian columns supporting a pediment as a classical composition that draws the eye toward the Eucharistic focal point, unifying the sanctuary as a coherent, dignified setting for worship.
